Eyelid Surgery

The purpose of eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is to restore a more youthful look to the eyes. The procedure can correct wrinkles, reduce puffy bags, and lighten heavy lids – working to literally open the eyes of the patient – and give them a more youthful and energized appearance.

The natural process of aging causes changes to the eyes that makes a person look older and tired. Heavily wrinkled skin around the eye may also be the simple result of aging or it may be hereditary.

There are two types of eyelid surgical procedures designed to rejuvenate the eyes – performed on either the upper or lower sets of lids, or both at the same time.

In an upper blepharoplasty, the surgeon removes skin from around the upper eyelid along with a small amount of fat. There are more variations in the procedure for the lower eyelid: in the transconjunctival approach, the surgeon removes fat via a small incision made in the inside lining of the eye. The alternative method is the subciliary approach where the fat is removed by making a tiny incision just underneath the eyelashes. Once this heals, this incision becomes invisible. The complete surgery can take up to one and a half hours if both the upper and lower blepharoplasty are being performed at the same time.

Recovery time: Sutures out in five days to one week. Swelling and bruising for up to two weeks.
