Submental Lipectomy

November 23, 2011

Fatty tissue and excess skin beneath the jaw result in people having a double chin. This may look cute on a child's face but a double chin can become more noticeable during the aging process as skin becomes more lax. Jowls that are more prominent can cause a person to look older than they actually are. With age, the chin loses its definition from a profile view, literally sliding into the neck.

A submental lipectomy is an excellent remedy for anyone noticing this condition worsen with age. Submental simply means "beneath the chin", and lipectomy is a very simple surgical procedure that removes fat. It should be noted that this surgery is not meant to enhance weight loss, but as an aid in facial contouring.

A tiny incision is made under the chin bone and fat deposits are excised from the jowl and chin region. If there is too much excess skin, the superficial platysma muscles may have to be cut and sutured. These are the muscles that cause the appearance of bands to form on the neck. The tightening of these muscles cause the jawline to appear at a better angle with the neck. It redefines the jawline and reduces the appearance of a receding chin. If there is an accumulation of loose skin around the neck and not just below the chin, a necklift procedure would be a more suitable solution. To restore balance to the shape of the face and to enhance your profile, it might be advantageous for some clients to consider a chin implant as well. It can easily be inserted through the same incision.

A submental lipectomy is performed using local anaesthetic with mild sedation. Sutures are removed from under the chin in 4 to 5 days, leaving no visible scarring. It is normal to be able to return to work within just a few days, but I advise my clients to refrain from strenuous activities for 2 to 3 weeks.

Every client has specific desires and needs. A consultation at our Yorkville clinic will determine if this procedure would achieve the results you’re looking for.
