Chin Implant Q&A

May 17, 2011

Who are the best candidates for chin implants?
Chin implants are an excellent solution for people who are not satisfied with their profile, due to either the projection of their chin or because of a retruded chin (its backward slope)
People who are not pleased with the proportion of their face due to a weak jawline would benefit from this procedure as well.

What are the results I can expect?
When the chin becomes more prominent, it can have a dramatic effect on the shape of the face, adding a more balanced appearance. This improved symmetry often compliments the shape and size of the nose as well.
A chin implant will improve facial proportions and, in some cases, even produce a younger look.
There are low complications associated with this type of procedure with very predictable results which add up to high patient satisfaction.

How will I know what size and shape would be best for my chin implant?
Our Yorkville clinic was the first facility in Canada to incorporate the 3D Vectra imaging system. It allows our patients a 360 degree view of themselves prior to the implant and the ability to choose the augmentation they feel comfortable with.
There are standards in facial symmetry, so by using the 3D imaging system together, it will enable us to make the right choice for you.

What type of material is used for the implant? All of our implants are pre shaped, extended anatomical implants. Silicone is the most commonly used implant material primarily because it is safe and has a very successful track record. Only the highest medical grade silicone is used to ensure our patients don't experience infection.

What is the surgical procedure?

This procedure is possible to perform using local anesthesia with sedation. It is a fairly short, straightforward procedure where a small incision is made under the chin which is not visible.

Is there a chance the implant will slip or move?
The silicone implant is textured to ensure there is no chance of slippage. It is sutured securely to the patients deep muscle tissue. As a result, an implant that moves or shifts is very rare.

How long can I expect my recovery to be?
Patients should expect a quick recovery and to resume their normal routine in less than a 1 week. Stitch removal happens on the 5th day. Pain medication as well as antibiotics will be prescribed during the healing process. Some may experience a numbness in their bottom lip for several weeks after surgery, but this is considered normal.

What is the cost of an average chin implant?

The cost of this procedure is approximately $4,000 at our clinic; however it can be less if combined with other procedures.
